A NOTE ON iPAD DATA RECOVERY AND DATA ENCRYPTION:

"All modern iPads use a robust hardware based encryption layer built into the device itself. "

So why is important to know that iPad uses a hardware based encryption or a software based one and how does this impact our Apple iPad data recovery approach and methodology?

ARE IPADS ENCRYPTED?

Yes. iPads have encryption capabilities. By default, all data stored on an iPad is encrypted using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with a 256-bit key. This encryption helps to protect your personal and professional data stored on the device, such as photos, videos, documents, and other sensitive information. Additionally, if an iPad is locked with a passcode, the encryption key is further protected by the passcode, making it more difficult for unauthorized access. However, it's important to note that the encryption on iPads only works if the device is locked with a passcode, or if you have enabled Touch ID or Face ID as a way to unlock it. If the device is not locked, the data is not encrypted and it can be accessed by anyone with physical access to the device.

DO IPADS HAVE A PHYSICAL ENCRYPTION PROTOCOL?

The answer is both YES and NO. iPads do not have a physical encryption mechanism built-in, but the data stored on an iPad is encrypted when the device is locked with a passcode, or when Touch ID or Face ID is enabled. This means that the encryption key is protected by the passcode, Touch ID or Face ID and it makes it more difficult for unauthorized access. In addition to that, when the device is locked or in sleep mode, the encryption key is held in the Secure Enclave, a dedicated security coprocessor that is isolated from the main processor, this provides extra level of protection to the encryption key.

It's worth mentioning that,
if you have an iPad Pro, the device also has a feature called the Secure Element:

  • which is a separate chip that stores encryption keys, this allows for even more security for sensitive data stored on the device, as well as secure payment transactions.

It's important to note that if you want to ensure the maximum security of your data, it's highly recommended to enable a passcode, Touch ID or Face ID and also to keep your device updated with the latest security patches and firmware.

SO WHAT DOES HARDWARE ENCRYPTION MEAN FOR APPLE IPAD DATA RECOVERY?

"Encrypted data is ALWAYS a challenge to recover, regardless if it is an Apple iMAC or iPad. Even by recovering the raw sectors from a failed drive, for example, does not mean success as those sectors are still encrypted, which means it is still scrambled."

So why is important to know that iPad uses a hardware based encryption or a software based one and how does this impact our Apple iPad data recovery approach and methodology? For data recovery purposes, hardware encryption can make it more challenging to recover lost or deleted files from an iPad, as the encryption key is protected by the passcode, Touch ID or Face ID. This means that in order to access the encrypted data, the passcode, Touch ID or Face ID must first be unlocked or bypassed, which can be a complex process.

However, it's important to note that Wildfire Data Recovery engineers have the necessary tools and expertise to unlock or bypass passcode, Touch ID or Face ID and decrypt the data, even if the device is encrypted. Please make no attempts at home as this can lead to your iPAD becoming disabled and all the data being lost. We can help with all of the below, plus much more:

  • assist with iOS corruption,

  • lost or forgotten 4 or 6 digit pin codes,

  • detection and removal of malware,

  • detection and removal of spyware such as mSPY,

  • collection and analysis of iPad data for complex investigations (stalking cases, abuse from ex-partners etc.)

  • resulting from iPad Error 14,

  • iPad stuck in recovery mode or

  • Error 4013

WHAT WE CAN AND CANNOT RECOVER DATA FROM

Our Wildfire Data Recovery, iPad file recovery services come with a documented 97% success rate. Unfortunately, this does not mean that we can recover data from any iPad problem. Like all electronic devices with built in complexity, iPads have limitations to what can be recovered. This of course depends on the issue and the complexity of the problem.

We all know that the Apple store can solve a lot of the day to day problems we may experience with our iPhones, but do not give up if the Apple store or a local repair shop is deeming your data unrecoverable!

Data recovery we can and can’t do for iOS phones, iPads and Apple music players

While we can help in many situations, unfortunately data recovery isn't always possible from mobile devices.

Our expert data recovery technicians have recovered thousands of water damaged iPads. We have repaired and recovered iPads from river beds, ocean floors, and the most common bathroom fixtures. For the highest success rates, our engineers utilize pro-grade ultrasonic cleaning systems.

WHAT TO DO WITH A WATER DAMAGED IPAD:

You may be wondering how to fix a water damaged iPad, what your options may be or if data recovery is even possible? Our Wildfire Data Recovery engineers recommend our clients to follow the below simple steps to ensure your iPad has the greatest chance of data recovery and retain any remaining functionality following water damage (please note that not all or any of the below recommendations will work for your particular failure). If your iPad has been water damaged, it's important to take immediate action to try and present it to Wildfire Data Recovery as soon as possible.

Here are the steps you should take:

  1. Deep breaths, don’t panic! Modern iPads (the later models) are water resistant.

  2. Instantly following the water drop incident, wipe the tablet down and gently tap the charging port against the palm of your hand, with the port facing down (if the tablet has residue falling from the port, please call us immediately on 0424053510 and get advice from a certified Apple data recovery engineer).

  3. If the device is still on, instantly turn the device off and do not attempt to restart or reset the device.

  4. NEVER PLUG THE IPAD INTO A POWER SUPPLY! Any moisture that has penetrated into the tablet and around the logic board will instantly cause a short circuit or electronic damage, leading to possible unrecoverable damage.

  5. Refer to the Liquid Contact Indicators (contact our engineers to ask what this means).

  6. Do not attempt to DRY YOUR TABLET IN RICE or with any heat source. Debris from rice particles or excessive heat may cause further damage to the intricate circuitry of the logic board

"If the device no longer functions once it has come into contact with water, contact our experts for assistance as soon as you can. With water damage, those who act quick have a much higher chance of success."

Like most data storage devices both physical damage and logical errors can occur:

  • An example of physical damage on a smartphone is when the flash memory chip or the used controller fails on the internal circuit board caused by a fall (see story above) and now the device can no longer be used. Or the internal memory chips partially break within the device and data can no longer be accessed or saved.

  • Several examples of a logical error would be missing or incorrect file structures or linkages, corrupt files and file formats as well as faulty memory allocations. In short, all logical errors cause files not to be displayed, but still exist on the memory.
